What Is Pterygium?
Pterygium is commonly called surfer’s eye or farmer’s eye, but you don’t have to be a surfer or a farmer to get this eye condition.
A pterygium will appear as a raised, white or pink tissue on the white of one or both eyes, near the area close to your nose.
Although it’s not typically a medical emergency and it may clear up on its own, some people are self-conscious about the appearance of this condition. You can also start to experience vision problems or eye irritations such as:
- Astigmatism (if the shape of your cornea becomes distorted)
- Blurry vision (if the growth covers your pupil)
- Feeling of a foreign sensation
- Redness, burning, or itching
5 Risk Factors
- Genetics: this condition can be hereditary
- Age: Pterygium is more common in people over 40
- Gender: Pterygium is typically more prevalent in men
- Outdoor Activities: Exposure to sun & wind
- Immune System Disorders
Exposure to damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun poses the highest risk
Pterygium Treatments
- Over-the-counter eye ointments
- Lubricated eyedrops
- Prescription medications to reduce
If these methods are unsuccessful, we may discuss surgical treatment options
How to Reduce Risk
- Wear 99%-100% UVA and UVB protection sunglasses (preferably wrap-around) when you are outside
- Reduce your exposure to dusty/windy and low humidity environments
- Wear wide-brim hats to shield your eyes from the sun.
If you notice a growth on your eye, it is best to have it checked by a professional. Contact us today to arrange an appointment!
